John Piper Falls Deeper Into the Pit!

On Nov 5, 2009, The Desert Pastor wrote an article about John Piper and laid out some things that were very concerning.  I think many people were upset over the fact that The Desert Pastor called John Piper  to account over the things below:

  1. Mixing oxymorons for many years such as “Christian hedonism”
  2. Openly endorsing Mark Driscoll (the vulgar, sewer-mouthed talker) with no known retractions
  3. Blasphemously claiming the Lord of Glory was damned upon the cross
  4. Openly endorsing the Federal Vision heresy as proclaimed by men like Douglas Wilson, and clearly indicating that Douglas Wilson is NOT preaching another or false gospel
  5. Openly endorsing the New Perspective on Paul heresy as proclaimed by men like N.T. Wright, and clearly stating that N.T. Wright is also NOT preaching another or false gospel, but that the NPP is merely a “confusing gospel!  (HT: Defending Contending written by The Desert Pastor)

Now, that John Piper has hit that pinnacle of what seems like “godhood” where he can do no wrong in the eyes of his adoring public, he begins to openly bring other men to his conferences that are known to be lovers of this world rather than lovers of God.  I believe we are truly in the last days where we see men, who we thought loved God, turn from Him because the praise of man was more to be sought after than the praise of God.  What a sad commentary of this day and age…and yet it was prophesied all those many years ago that it would happen.

The news has hit that John Piper is having Rick Warren, “The Purpose Driven Life” writer, into his conference as one of the speakers of the 2010 Desiring God Conference.  He says he believes that Rick Warren is theologically more at home where he is than where an Armenian is.  He told Rick Warren he believes he is the most pragmatist pastor in the whole world.  He then goes on to tell Rick Warren that he didn’t believe he was a pragmatist at root.  “Come and tell us why thinking biblically matters to you in your amazingly pragmatic approach to ministry.”  One of the other things Piper says is that he believes that Warren is theological and sound at root.  Here is where you can listen for yourself to what John Piper has to say!

To say that I am shocked over this would be a lie.  I have begun sharing with people that Piper is not on the straight and narrow when he brings false teachers into his church who PURPOSEFULLY go contrary to the Word of God.  If it’s easy to invite a loud and foul-mouthed preacher (who worships a god that is a sex pervert) into your church, then it becomes easier to invite other pastors who teach contrary to the Word of God.   This causes the question to be asked, “Which Jesus is he worshiping?”  I believe the KJV has an excellent way of saying it in the parable of the seeds.

Luke 8:11-18, “Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.  Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.  They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.  And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.  But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.  No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light.  For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known and come abroad.  Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have. {seemeth…: or, thinketh that he hath}” This person (whoever it is)– “that which he seemeth to have” does not really have what we think he does and will be shown for what he truly is.  It is important to note that one day we will see people in hell who thought they were worshiping the one, true God and found out they weren’t.

Mt 7:13-22, “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:  Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.  Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.  Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?  Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.  A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.  Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.  Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.  Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.  Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?’  And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!'”

Now,  I am sure some will be very irate over what I have just said.  A pastor, who makes a habit of endorsing lies and false doctrine, is suspect as to whom he truly worships.  I understand that all of us sin and I’m sure I will hear this from many.  I am in total agreement that all of us sin and none are perfect; however, that does not let any pastor off the hook!  Pastors  (and anyone in a position of leadership) will be held accountable to God one day for what he teaches or what he allows within the flock the Lord has entrusted him!  I do not say any of this lightly as it is a sad day when pastors, who say they are true believers, begin to allow false shepherds to lead their flock away.  What’s worse is when they encourage this to happen!

  1. This is so tragic! Piper has been used so greatly in helping to lead the evanglical church back to truth, and now it’s as though he’s making a complete U-turn. Let’s just pray that he won’t take too many along with him.

    • The sad thing is that a person doesn’t just up and suddenly start going contrary to the Word of God. There is normally a gradual decline and then it becomes so steep that the trek back up is next to impossible. I understand that he is taking a step away from the ministry due to “unnamed pride”. Maybe this will be the step that helps him to return to the Lord and not keep heading downhill. It is tragic that he is headed in this direction and in some ways it is very unnerving because I have seen so many pastors in the past year that have gone downhill! These are men that I would never have believed it of them but that’s the direction they went. Having said that my prayer is that I would stay true to the Lord no matter what happens because the truth does apply to me as it does to anyone else, “That person, except for the grace of God, could be me!”

  2. Sooo… Um, I guess you didn’t know that Piper and NT Wright have a bit of a theological feud going on. OK, feud is a bit much… but Piper has written a book criticizing NT Wright’s “New Perspective” and NT Wright has written a rebuttal to that book. No way has Piper endorsed NT Wright’s “New Perspective” on Paul – in fact he disagrees with it.

…and I tend to side with NT Wright on this one, so there’s no reason for me to defend Piper. Just say’n.

    • I did know that Piper and NT Wright have been debating but his comment explains the way he looks at it. In a nutshell the NPP is another way of saying that it takes works for us to get to heaven. Piper has said that NPP is a confusing gospel which endorses NPP in a round about way. It is not a confusing gospel to say that we are working for our salvation. It is contrary to Scripture because the Bible says, “For by grace are you saved through faith and that not of yourselves it is the gift of God…NOT of works lest any man should boast.” (Eph. 2:8-9) If someone claims they have something new to share about Scripture that no one else knew about then beware because normally it is contrary to Scripture.

  3. I cannot endure false doctrine, however neatly it may be put before me. Would you have me eat poisoned meat because the dish is of the choicest ware? It makes me indignant when I hear another gospel put before the people with enticing words, by men who would fain make merchandise of souls; and I marvel at those who have soft words for such deceivers…Their powerless theology cannot of itself arouse sufficient enthusiasm to enable them to build a mousetrap at the expense of their admirers. -Charles Spurgeon

  6. John Piper’s “slide” is not really a slide. He has been where he is at for a very long time, it has simply gone unconfronted. He embraced John Wimber, healing prayers of faith, and got a degree from Fuller seminary. Others have critqued his bad theology about hedonism years ago:

A lot of it has to do with the fact that, theologians/teachers probably have to sign some type of agreement when they have a company publish their books. I am assuming that a company like IVP or Crossway, for example, would not want one of their published writers criticizing another of their published writers. Hence the reason why you have so many so-called theologians/teachers who are afraid to take a stand, and denounce those who are teaching a false gospel, or who have a theological perspective that is dangerous.

  8. I’m very confused with what is going on here..I’m a very new born again christian serving in afghanistan right now..I was sent the book a purpose driven life from my friends mom, and also she sent me crazy love by francis chan..Ive been reading them for a few days now and reading the bible along with it and comparing the things they are saying in these books…are the men that have written these books false teachers? from what I have read it seems great, and the thoughts pulled straight from the bible..( but then again, I have not yet dug deep enough into the scripture.) I dont want to be lead astray by false teachings..I’m changing my life and striving to be what god wants from us all. If someone could please help me out here! Also..I remember awhile back a good christian friend of mine(before I found faith) used to always talk about john piper and how great he is..what happened?

    • My Mr. Wallace, do not be dismayed. In the largest sense Piper, Warren, and even Wright preach the truth that Jesus is God and Savior, having died and returned from the dead to redeem us.

But men like Piper, Waren, and Wright have become celebrities on the power of their own unique twists to Christianity and salvation. Their unique twists are not proper (Piper’s twist is his notion that to be saved one must become a “hedonist,” while Warren seems to think works will transform people into making this world into the next paradise, and Wright is just plain confused and does not Scripture to be inerrant but has sold many books spreading that confusion).

I might avoid books by those men, though not all of what they teach is wrong, just badly skewed toward a personal view of the faith (a personal view which makes them money). Books on being a Christian by Jay Adams, D.A.Carson, Ken Sande, Stuart Scott, and even John MacArthur will serve you much better as these are time tested conservative and generally trustworthy teachers.
